The Telethon for African Water Wells, hosted by Carole Gibson, begins with a spoken word poem performed by Elise Bryant, Director of the Common Ground Theatre Ensemble in Ann Arbor. Guests include Edward Pierce, mayor of Ann Arbor, former Michigan Senator, and founder of the Summit Medical Clinic; Jemadari Kamara, Director of the Afro-American Center at the University of Michigan in Flint; Larry Hunter, member of the Ann Arbor Council; and Allen Roberts, professor of anthropology at Albion College, a research scientist at the University of Michigan's Center for African and Afro-American Studies, and a consultant for the United States Agency for International Development.
